We Live In Interesting Times

Spring Break came to an end on March 17th, but that was extended by a week for the college could retool to go 100% online. As my on-campus classes have online presence, pivoting was not an issue for me, but has been for some of my students and so working with them has been time consuming for everyone. Hopefully they will stay onboard.

The Johnson Space Center closed down, except for those in direct support of Station and so as my wife is the Center's Historian, she too is working from home. And, as the school district moved to 100% online, our 7 year old son is working/learning from home.

Quite the challenge as he is in a dual immersion program. My Spanish is not that good to teach nearly all of his subjects in Spanish. In reality he is only getting Spanish in Spanish. All other subjects he is getting in English.

So here is our general schedule Monday-Friday:

5:00-5:30       Answering work email
5:30-6:30       Writing (textbook)
7:00-8:00       Walk (me)
8:00-8:30       Breakfast (everyone)
8:30-10:00     Julius school work (parent and Julius)
10:30-11:30   Bike ride (everyone)
11:30-1:00     Julius school work (parent and Julius)
1:00-1:30       Lunch/answer work email (everyone)
1:30-2:00      Walk (everyone)
2:00-3:30      Julius school work (parent and Julius)
3:30-5:00      Dinner prep (me)
5:00-6:00      Dinner (everyone)
6:00-6:30      Walk (everyone)
6:30-7:30      Paint D&D minis (Julius and I)
7:30-10:00    Work (my wife and I, individually)
10:00-10:30  Cartoon Network (me)
11:00            Bed

On the weekends I do more baking, Julius and I do more painting of minis and playing of Dungeons and Dragons, gardening, reading for fun, napping, and watching movies/TV.

All f this togetherness is not easy. When we go out for walks, one of us will go with Julius and the other will go by our self. Many times I will get up closer to 4, sometimes 3, to get in more writing or if I have a lot of grading to do.

On the day that the Harris County Judge and the Houston Mayor shut down the rodeo I went shopping for 30 days of canned food (mainly beans, tomatoes, tuna, stock, and peanut butter) and six weeks of paper goods and cleaning supplies (including bleach and bleach wipes). Did not buy any masks, however. We did have some in the garage leftover from our last painting job, however when I do go out now I use a homemade mask: a 100% cotton bandanna wrapped around a cotton diaper for filtering. I use two hair scrunchies to secure the mask to my ears and wash everything (including my clothes) as soon as I return. Here's a photo of my mask:

No one in my family is sick and I know no one who is sick. Let's keep it that way.
