We Live In Interesting Times

Spring Break came to an end on March 17th, but that was extended by a week for the college could retool to go 100% online. As my on-campus classes have online presence, pivoting was not an issue for me, but has been for some of my students and so working with them has been time consuming for everyone. Hopefully they will stay onboard.

The Johnson Space Center closed down, except for those in direct support of Station and so as my wife is the Center's Historian, she too is working from home. And, as the school district moved to 100% online, our 7 year old son is working/learning from home.

Quite the challenge as he is in a dual immersion program. My Spanish is not that good to teach nearly all of his subjects in Spanish. In reality he is only getting Spanish in Spanish. All other subjects he is getting in English.

So here is our general schedule Monday-Friday:

5:00-5:30       Answering work email
5:30-6:30       Writing (textbook)
7:00-8:00       Walk (me)
8:00-8:30       Breakfast (everyone)
8:30-10:00     Julius school work (parent and Julius)
10:30-11:30   Bike ride (everyone)
11:30-1:00     Julius school work (parent and Julius)
1:00-1:30       Lunch/answer work email (everyone)
1:30-2:00      Walk (everyone)
2:00-3:30      Julius school work (parent and Julius)
3:30-5:00      Dinner prep (me)
5:00-6:00      Dinner (everyone)
6:00-6:30      Walk (everyone)
6:30-7:30      Paint D&D minis (Julius and I)
7:30-10:00    Work (my wife and I, individually)
10:00-10:30  Cartoon Network (me)
11:00            Bed

On the weekends I do more baking, Julius and I do more painting of minis and playing of Dungeons and Dragons, gardening, reading for fun, napping, and watching movies/TV.

All f this togetherness is not easy. When we go out for walks, one of us will go with Julius and the other will go by our self. Many times I will get up closer to 4, sometimes 3, to get in more writing or if I have a lot of grading to do.

On the day that the Harris County Judge and the Houston Mayor shut down the rodeo I went shopping for 30 days of canned food (mainly beans, tomatoes, tuna, stock, and peanut butter) and six weeks of paper goods and cleaning supplies (including bleach and bleach wipes). Did not buy any masks, however. We did have some in the garage leftover from our last painting job, however when I do go out now I use a homemade mask: a 100% cotton bandanna wrapped around a cotton diaper for filtering. I use two hair scrunchies to secure the mask to my ears and wash everything (including my clothes) as soon as I return. Here's a photo of my mask:

No one in my family is sick and I know no one who is sick. Let's keep it that way.

  1. Glad to see that you and your family are doing well during these times. So is mine, although I found it interesting that everyone in your household has been able to maintain a schedule that includes y’all being together. I’ll shamefully admit that every individual in my household has a completely different agenda each day. While my siblings and I sleep in until 10 A.M., my mom has been in the living room watching T.V. or stitching since 8 A.M., and my dad has been working since 5 A.M. By the time he gets back home, at around 2 P.M., it’s up to anyone’s guess to see what we’re all doing. I might be doing homework, my sister might be in her room watching anime, my brother could be in his room playing with his toys, and my mom might be in her room on a business call. My family and I are in the same house, but that doesn’t mean we’re always in the same room, not even for meals. However, one thing we all have in common within our schedules, is that we all go outside at the same time. We found that six in the afternoon was the best time to be outside and play sports without it being too hot. My mom and brother sit in the backyard on the rocking chair, playing music and stitching, while my sister and I play volleyball with our dad. Overall I can’t say that my family is in sync like yours is, but it’s something that works for us. Anyways, stay safe out there!

  2. It has been a hard few weeks for me to adjust to online classes. One because I am new to taking online classes. My daily schedule does not really exist. MY daily schedule comes when the day starts. That stresses me because I do not have a set hour for doing work for school or taking breaks. The fact that I am Winging this worries me because I know how i can be inconsistent at times. But I am pushing myself to have a set schedule to do work, have some time to myself, and spend time with my family and siblings. We have been looking for face masks to be covered up and stay safe. I am glad to hear that you and your family is safe. I hope that you are about to keep that schedule that you have made for yourself and your family. You guys will be in my thoughts and prayers to stay safe through this pandemic.

    1. Just like you it was hard for the first few weeks. Plus, I have not taken online classes either. I agree with you. You should manage your time. Time management is really important in life specially if you work and do college. Managing your time can help a lot so that you can spend more time with your family. It will help you socialize more with your family. Not everything in life is just school. You have to make a schedule every week on what you have to do. What I do is that I write my assignments on a planner every time that I start the year. I write it on the due dates, and I check every month what has to be done each month. From there your life will be easier. You will manage your time with college and your family.

  3. Hard days have come. Even though all of that is now real, you well-prepared yourself and family, and that´s exceptional. In my personal case, we have been concealed in our department, the whole family, with my parents with no work to do and us taking care of our classes online, there is no much to do by only staying safe inside our comfort. The only whose job is to go out and buy the food is my father, he is the one risking his life, but taking the necessary steps to disinfect himself and to be protected during the shopping. We have accustomed to the way our society lives right now, always hoping that everyone is safe and doing well, not quitting or giving up for us students, there is business to get completed and work to be done.

  4. Going through my day to day without a schedule was really taking a toll on me. I knew I desperately needed one, so I made one. It runs from 7:30am to 12:00am, and it makes me feel great and prepared for the day. My schedule is not very strict, but it allows me to stick to a normal sleeping routine. I live alone with my older sister, and she needed a schedule too. She cannot return to work until this all passes over. She has her own schedule where she keeps herself busy and stays active. We began to take walks together every day along with the dogs. The dogs are enjoying the new lifestyle, and it has begun to grow on us as well.

  5. I love how your schedule includes everyone in the house hold. At first it was difficult to start online classes but I eventually stopped procrastinating and got to work. My sister works from home now, my mom still has to go to her job (as a bus driver), she makes a few hours of work by donating free food to families who drive by at George I. Sanchez Charter School right behind the Walmart that’s on Wayside. My other sister works at a daycare but with limited staff and children. I myself have the rest of the day to study on schoolwork and finally do the things I have been wanting to do. My old schedule was to go to school, come home to study for two hours then go to work, then get off of work to go straight to spin class with two of my older sisters. Dinner, then free time to get on my pc. Now my family gets to be home all at once and finally get to know each other a little better, we all stand or throw a bed sheet on our front yard to just sit down for a few minutes during the day and evenings with our two little dogs. Although this is a terrible time for some people, its great to see the parks and neighborhoods being so active. People riding bikes, flying a kite, playing sports, doing BBQ’s almost every day of the week, donating to charities, is all heartwarming to me.

  6. Glad to hear you all are safe. I like how you have a set schedule. unfortunate for me something new is always coming up last minute. In the mornings like around five my parents wake up my dad for work, my mom to fix his lunch. my brother also wakes up at that hour to take my dad to work since he can't drive. later in the day around eight i wake up to do breakfast once m done cooking i wake up my sister for her to be able to eat something before she start her classes. Around this time my brother comes home and sit with me and my mom for breakfast. once we finish my mom starts cleaning the house, my brother spends all day playing games, and i spend all day with homework and work. even though everyone is doing their own thing, I'm just glad everyone is safe and healthy.

  7. The epidemic that we face and the responses from every level of our government have taken quite a toll on our daily lives and even mental health, especially for those of us who love to socialize and stay out most of the time. Those who are particularly responsible about the situation, have taken the necessary precautions to ensure the wellbeing of those they are usually around and live with. Making routines and keeping to them have proven to be challenging but can often help us stay sane and productive. Keeping ourselves busy whether that includes starting a small business and investing, learning a new language, enhancing our creative talents, or cooking and baking new recipes, all within the safety of our homes. I personally am not a home person, however, for the safety of my loved ones I continue to do whatever I can to stay productive in every way that I can.

  8. I am glad that you and your family and doing well during this pandemic. I also like the schedule you designed very much; it seems that your days will be spent being productive. I do not personally have a routine that defined, but I do spend most of the day working, which has done a great job at keeping my mental health in check. Adjusting to spending most of our times at home can be hard, and I suggest hobbies as a solution. Maybe it is time to read that book you never finished, watch that new movie or even spend more time with our families. Regardless of how we choose to use this newly found free time, it is important that we do it safely. The most important thing right now is to help flatten the curve and help take stress off the medical workers. I hope this pandemic ends soon, so that people may return to their daily activities. Let us help each other to get there.

  10. Good to know you’re doing well! It’s really nice that you have a set schedule, I feel like that allows you to be more productive and successful throughout the day. From what I recall, the first few weeks of quarantine were not very productive for me. I was having trouble adapting to the online instruction and did not really have any type of schedule for the day. I finally got around to creating a simple one that would help me go about my day and help me feel less stressed. Even though both my parents are considered essential workers and are out every day working, they are making sure to follow all health/safety precautions necessary to keep a healthy environment for us. Hopefully this ends sooner rather than later and everyone stays safe and healthy!

  11. Glad to hear people are doing well- or as well as we can be doing. Like many of you, my family and I stocked up on canned goods and some toiletries. Thankfully, things didn’t get as terrible as we expected things to be and stores remain open, but even though they remained open, stocking up on some things means we don’t have the need to go out into the big crowds during this pandemic as often as others. However, on days that we do need to go out to buy some produce, I’ve noticed that there are still many people who aren’t taking the situation seriously. There are people standing in big crowds close to each other without any face protections of any kind going on like nothing is happening, I don’t understand what goes on in their head. Even before the county order to wear masks in public was passed, my mom has been making us wear masks at all times spent outside our home (and gloves)- which meant many people stared and maybe some laughed and thought, “Wow, look at those crazies! They’re overreacting.” And sure, maybe it wasn’t necessary, but we’re not sick so I guess we did well.

  12. These are certainly interesting times my family and I were definitely not prepare for a situation like this but we are definitely doing the most we can. Since we are going through a difficult time don’t have a schedule. Our routine changes weekly sometimes one of my parents gets to work and the other stays home while we try to figure out how to make the best of the situation. While my routine and my brothers is to use our home resources as best as we can to complete our school work and remain calm. It has certainly been difficult to find mask and sanitizing supplies. But we have made the best of it by making masks from some left-over cloth from a previous craft project. I am glad you and your family have found a schedule to fit all family members and are remaining safe during this pandemic.

  13. It is a relief to hear that must of us are doing just fine, when this whole covid-19 pandemic began I was having a short spring break vacation back in Mexico with my family, at that moment I thought "Man I'm going to be stuck here for longer than I thought" because the Mexican president was talking about closing the U.S border. but that same day went to the bus station and got my come back ticket, after that I went to the supermarket to buy supplies for my family, so they don't expose themselves. Something that I just read from your post is that you have a Monday to Friday schedule, I believe all of us should have one for ourselves in order not to get bored at home and do something productive instead, I'm looking forward to do one for myself.

  14. I am glad that everyone is safe and has an everyday routine. As for me, I am safe, as well as my family but, it is hard to keep up with a schedule. I am not going to lie, I have been waking up late; I usually wake up around 6:30am and I have been slacking till 9:00am and that is just because I stay up late. Although my job is temporally closed for the public, I am happy that my boss decided to keep us in, even if it meant to disinfect the whole store. I would go in from 9:00am till 5:00pm from Monday- Friday. That would give my sisters enough time to catch up with their work. I also have someone going to boot camp in the military so I am constantly writing to check up on him. I also have to do my personal needs like shower and eat. This all leads up to doing my homework at last minute that I end up sleeping at 12:00am. I just wish everyone the best of luck and hope your days are better than mine!

    1. I agree, having a schedule and keeping up with it can a struggle especially if you have other things to do. Life ain't easy and staying on the positive side is quite relaxing. I'm the type of person who would make up a schedule and not keep up with it. I'm trying to change my habit by starting of small. I'll make a schedule with some small tasks to do and build up from there. I'm grateful to be working even if its once or twice a week, something better than nothing. I hope everybody is doing ok and are happy and healthy.
