So, anyhow, about AI

Overall, AI is evil. At least in my little world. This semester I caught numerous students who used ChatGPT to create their essays. I found it really easy to spot these examples of plagiarism. Very little detail. General statements. Not many specifics. No analysis. Just dull, linear narratives.

I may be gruff, but I am lovable, so I gave my students the opportunity to fall on their swords. If they did, if they confessed their sins to me, I gave them an opportunity to do the assignment the correct way. Interestingly everyone I identified as using AI to do their work acknowledged doing so. Which included a profession of disappointment in themselves and a promise to never turn to the dark side again (at least in my class).

We had to take three professional development classes this semester. I took one on AI and how to use it successfully. We were shown how AI in various fields or disciplines but in the Liberal Arts and Humanities, AI can be easily abused.

So many of my colleagues reported students plagiarizing their work this semester by using ChatGPT. Some came down hard by reporting them for their deviance, while others gave students the opportunity to redo the work. What we had in common was the need to stop our students from using AI. We were introduced to AI programs that can tell us if the work was written by ChatGPT, or some other AI. Those are remarkably accurate, such as GPTZero. This article covers various detection software.

Well, ChatGPT might not be here to stay but harder-to-detect AI is on the horizon and those will indeed write more thoughtful, meaningful, and insightful papers. At that point, we are in deep kimchi.

However, I think what we cannot do with AI is ignore it, sweep it under the rug, police it into a SuperMax, or exile it to Guantanamo Bay. There are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor.

Students are using AI to cheat. So why not bring the Trojan Horse within our classroom walls, this time knowing what to expect? AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one and when we do, we look upon students' use of AI as something "criminal."

Let us identify the positive or beneficial aspects of AI and put those to the test. Inevitably, we will have to live by the words of Rodney King who in 1992 asked "Can't we all get along?"

    1. How to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity. Students must be cautious about over-reliance on artificial intelligence as it could impede their ability to produce original content. The opaqueness of AI tools can make it challenging for humans to comprehend their judgments, potentially leading to a decline in creativity and an upsurge in plagiarism. Additionally, AI-based tools are not always unbiased and can be influenced by prejudices. While AI can be utilized for brainstorming and preparing assignments, it is imperative for students to demonstrate how it helped them achieve their final output. The comprehensive utilization of AI is encouraged, but students must acknowledge which sections were generated by AI. Properly identifying sources and producing original work is essential to avoid academic misconduct, such as plagiarism or commissioning. Using AI tools doesn't automatically imply academic dishonesty; it depends on how they are utilized. For instance, apps like ChatGPT can be advantageous for hesitant writers to generate a rough draft that they can later revise and update. Cheating by misusing AI to complete assignments or exams dishonestly is unacceptable.

  2. How can we protect educators? While AI can be beneficial for learning, many students take advantage of how helpful this technology is. AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one and when we do, we look upon students' use of AI as something "criminal." AI is great for cheating students but not for hard working educators. As someone who is going to college to become a teacher, watching the future of education unfold is very concerning. The use of technology in academic writing is already widespread. For example, many universities already use text-based plagiarism detectors like Turnitin, while students might use Grammarly, a cloud-based writing assistant. While AI can help guide students, some are going overboard and using AI to write their whole essay, using no effort to think and write on their own.
Advancements in technology have led to new tools being offered to writers to efficiently improve their writing. The more technology improves, the more some essays are likely to be generated solely by artificial intelligence. In schools, the implications of such developments will undoubtedly shape the future of learning, writing, and teaching. While reading Dr. Ross-Nazzal’s post about AI, one can see how much professors are struggling with this new technology.

  3. It is fascinating to see how much technology has developed over time. From typewriters and block-shaped telephones to desktop computers and mobile phones, people using AI technology to help them with their assignments, projects, classwork, or simply as a search engine is something I never expected. I agree with the idea that AI can bring both positive and negative aspects to education for the current and future generations of students. Even though AI can bring promising potential to help transform technology even further than it already is, the problems it can bring, such as cheating on assignments or simply depersonalizing student responses, are prevalent. It is a dilemma to approach when considering possible solutions for this problem. As said in the post, this issue cannot simply be swept under the rug. AI technology is now something that cannot be easily banned; students can easily cover the tracks of AI usage and would rather find more ways to integrate this technology into their work as well. Although, this problem may be best dealt with by using reliable plagiarism detection resources and keeping a healthy classroom culture that promotes honesty. As mentioned earlier in this response, a concern comes to mind about AI programs. As the detection for this type of technology decreases, would it affect the future generation's ability to analyze and reason with information and others? I assume assignments will become more depersonalized as time progresses. That is a concern that developers and educators may have to address and work together to overcome.

  4. As an aspiring Engineer I find AI to be both amazing and terrifying. On the one hand, the time, effort, money and resources it must have taken to develop such an AI is astonishing. It is a great showcase to what we are able to do as humans from our humble beginnings to now. I would argue that the recent development of AI is the next step as it allows for us to understand what might be considered an infinite amount of knowledge by giving it to an AI and then having it summarize and tell us what we need to know in seconds. On the other hand, the fact that a "machine" is able to do this and thus be considered smarter than us is terrifying. As I stated, an AI can interoperate all of the knowledge on the internet if given access to do so and who knows what it would do or think of its creators after doing so. Again, this isn't a bad thing if it is maintained. As Dr. Ross-Nazzal states in his blog post "As an aspiring Engineer I find AI to be both amazing and terrifying. This goes to support the idea of AI being that it can be a positive creation in the right hands and with the right uses in mind.

  5. Surprisingly as a student I just heard about ChatGPT this summer from my other class, and I am hearing AI for the first time in this class. In my recent research about ChatGPT, many people across social media attest ChatGPT can get it wrong on multiple occasions. OpenAI knows about this limitation, that ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers. The problem with the ChatGPT models is that they perpetuate gender, racial, and other kinds of social biases. Many scholars and users pointed out that when they used ChatGPT to gather data or write articles or essays on some topics, they received a biased output, reflecting harmful stereotypes. According to Dr JRN in his blog example of essay through ChatGPT, the outcome has “No many specifics, No analysis, and just dull, linear narratives” (So, anyhow, AI. 2023). Therefore, I do not see this app as an effective tool to improve our education system other than plagiarism. That is, it cannot be used as an authoritative source of information. Getting to know about AI, I am positive it could be of better use than ChatGPT, but there is a concern about some of its uses as highlighted by DR JRN especially in terms of technology's safety, trustworthiness, fairness, and transparency that need to be addressed. Research shows many people think that several uses of AI are generally beneficial, particularly for technologies related to health, science, and security. However, I do not believe students can throw AI under the carpet so far it been widely used in the society at large.

  7. AI is the next generation of the separation between church and state. During the course of U.S. history, particularly during Kennedy's administration, the separation of church and state, in regard to public schools, was a big deal. One side wished religion and public education to remain separate, whereas the other groups like Jerry Falwell and the Baptists believed the Church should maintain control over education. How does this relate to AI? Well, AI is here to stay, and it is only going to get more complex. So now, two ideologies have arisen; either we should figure out a way to separate AI from the classroom altogether, or we should figure out a way to integrate AI into the classroom without destabilizing the delicate balance between academic integrity and technology. While the circumstances are different, the story remains the same. We are currently at yet another pivotal moment in history that could change the way we educate for generations to come. We could treat AI like the enemy as Dr. Ross-Nazzal says in his blog post So, anyhow, about AI, just as religion, at least in the confines of public education, was treated as the enemy. However, just like Falwell did not view religion as the enemy, we can choose not to view AI as the enemy. It will be controversial, it will be hard, and mistakes will be made, but eventually educators will find the perfect middle-ground and how to optimize this amazing technology to enhance the education of future and current students.

  8. AI, or Artificial Intelligence, has significantly impacted education as a technological development. The printing press is a notable historical example of a technology that revolutionized education. Before its invention, knowledge was limited to manuscripts, making education exclusive and laborious. The printing press, introduced by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century, enabled mass production of books, democratizing access to knowledge. This transformative technology expanded education by providing more comprehensive access to information, standardizing curricula, and facilitating the exchange of ideas. Similarly, AI has the potential to bring about significant changes in education. It offers personalized learning experiences, adaptive assessments, and intelligent tutoring systems tailored to individual students. AI-powered tools automate administrative tasks, freeing up time for educators to focus on teaching. Virtual reality and simulations powered by AI create immersive learning environments.
However, AI's impact on education has challenges. Plagiarism is a concern, with students using AI to generate essays and assignments. Educators can adopt a proactive approach by integrating AI tools into the educational process to address this. Instead of treating AI as an enemy, it can be leveraged as a learning resource. Educators foster critical thinking and guide responsible AI use by teaching students about AI's capabilities and limitations. AI-powered plagiarism detection software, like GPTZero, can help identify instances of academic dishonesty. Such tools allow educators to maintain academic integrity while providing opportunities for growth and learning. Addressing ethical considerations, algorithm biases, privacy concerns, and the digital divide are essential to integrating AI into education.
In conclusion, AI can potentially transform education, like historical advancements such as the printing press. Educators can harness its benefits while upholding academic integrity by integrating AI into the classroom with proper guidance. AI offers personalized learning experiences, administrative support, and immersive environments. By understanding and addressing AI's challenges, educators can embrace its positive aspects, preparing students for the future while maintaining the rigor and integrity of their courses.

  9. I agree with your stance regarding that we are unable to sweep AI under rug, it is here to stay for an extremely long time. This not only involves students and educators, but everyone in society. I can appreciate the fact that you allowed your students to come clean and own up to their mistakes for using the tool thinking they will not be caught. Although I am currently indifferent when it comes to AI right now in its current state, I absolutely love the direction it is heading in as a service to society. I think in a few short years, many that are against it will come around on the idea of using AI as a tool. I am aware that we are still in the very early stages of Artificial Intelligence and can see the benefits as well as the downsides of it right now. There are going to be many growing pains when trying to properly utilize AI correctly as well as the information that the different AI tools provide us. I do believe that over time as it improves, it will greatly benefit society in a positive way. Also, I don’t believe many users that are trying to utilize AI now are aware of the vast variety of AI tools out there already. There are numerous different tools available that can resolve different issues possibly even better than ChatGPT. There are tools that can help increase productivity, content creation, coding, resume building, and even music and images! With all the attention that AI has created, all tech companies from large to small, will be adopting this technology and integrating it within their current platforms that society is already using today.

  10. I always used to have a hard time with figuring what else to write for my writing assignment until this summer that one of my managers who's also in the university about to finish told me about ChatGPT and how helpful is it but for people who knows how to use it and not take advantage of it. I have never heard about Al or what it is until now when I read the blog. As I read the article “16 of the bet Al and ChatGPT content detectors compared” I see that there are many sites that are fast to detect any plagiarism, however, Al- generated information can be incorrect, dangerous, outdated, or misleading. Yes, Al and ChatGPT can be very useful to make students understand the topic, but some students are lazy about it and go beyond copying everything that is written down. It is awesome that technology is advancing every year but is getting harder for teachers to identify plagiarism. I agree with Dr. Ross- Nazzal when he says “Al is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one “in his blog post “So, anyhow, about Al” because Al can have some positive and negative meaning. It can have a negative effect because it is decreasing the quality of education and reducing critical thinking. It also has positive effects because it can summarize your text and answer questions. It assists students in understanding the information given to them. Lastly, like professor Dr. Ross- Nazzal says in his blog “there are ways to bring Al into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course” but always putting all your effort in the lecture and giving your hundred percent on studying.

  11. The way AI is being used in today's education has been very rocky and has led to many issues in recent times. This is very reminiscent of American westward expansion in the way how people created villains out of Native Americans and how westward expansion degraded Native American culture. “Native Americans have been portrayed traditionally as rather negative … Stereotypically as the villain” This depiction of Native Americans during the time of westward expansion is similar to how some teachers make AI systems like ChatGPT out to be when in reality they may not see all the great things that AI bring to the table. But teacher's fear of AI is not unjustified the use of ChatGPT to complete essays is degrading the education system as students are no longer taking the time to learn and rely on AI systems to complete their work in a similar vein the degradation of Native American “The first step was to “detribalize” Indians -to break all tribal connections such as the roles of chiefs and medicine men, remove all communal ways of being and thinking.” These actions taken heavily degraded Native American culture and if the use of AI in schools remains the same the education system will suffer it will no longer be a system where students learn and show what they know but a task students see as a chore than a way to gain knowledge and show it. But as Dr, JRN states we need to find the positives of AI and see how they can be leveraged in the classroom.

  12. AI may be a technology that has the control to bring around significant changes to completely different regions, such as education and technology. Although there are concerns about potential misuse, it is critical to get it that AI is neutral and can be utilized for both positive and negative purposes. By integrating AI responsibly and ethically, we can tackle its control to drive progress and enhance different sectors. In education, responsible integration of AI in classrooms can yield various advantages. AI-powered systems can automate administrative assignments, such as reviewing assignments and organizing plans, freeing up important time for instructors to focus on instructional exercises. Moreover, AI can give personalized learning experiences, fitting educational substance to individual student's needs and preferences. This flexibility makes a difference, engages students to advance dynamic learning and cultivates a more profound understanding of concepts. But AI can too be unhealthy for students since the need for social differences in AI-generated substances, such as content created by ChatGPT, can have negative results in education. When AI models fail to reflect the differences of students within the education system, it can lead to an unjust learning environment. Students from diverse backgrounds may not see their experiences, viewpoints, and voices represented within the educational materials produced by AI. The misuse of AI in education by students such as utilizing the chat bots to do their assignments also reduces the quality of their learning and also would not let them improve their skills. In the field of technology, Artificial intelligence is already altering the world and raising important questions for society, the economy, and governance, improving human-machine intelligence, and enabling independent frameworks. Businesses are leveraging AI algorithms to streamline operations, optimize supply chains, and upgrade decision-making forms. AI-powered virtual collaborators and chatbots are revolutionizing client benefits by giving real-time assistance and personalized proposals.

  13. The use of artificial intelligence or AI has its pros and cons. In today’s day and age, technology is continuously changing. What may have been relevant a couple of years ago may be irrelevant today. Recently this past year artificial intelligence has taken the world by storm with how powerful it is. This relates to how the North was after the civil war. There was a rise in technology and governmental and economic order that assisted many people. An example includes the transition from the telegraph to the telephone. In today's age and after the civil war the north experienced technological changes that seem to be used by people almost every day. The famous AI software ChatGPT has shown that it can provide vast amounts of information when you ask for something. This can be crucial if someone wants information on a topic or just out of pure curiosity. It is beneficial for providing information quickly. However, as Dr. Ross Nazzal says, “AI can easily be abused.” The example Dr. Ross Nazzal uses is students plagiarizing their work. I would justify that indeed if students are not using it in the correct way it could lead to negative effects on themselves. Also, it has been shown that information provided by ChatGPT is not always accurate. AI takes away the creative side that many students have but are unwilling to use. They are exposed to so much technology that it is easy to take the short route. Some changes need to be made to prevent students from plagiarizing. This could relate to the progressive era where many people wanted to improve the society in the United States. They did this through social and political changes. ChatGPT can be something useful in society but first the dangers and misuse of it need to be addressed.

  14. AI has been around for quite some time now and so it is nothing new. But, it is amazing to see how advanced the development of this technology has gotten. For example, I came across some songs that AI was able to generate using the artists’ voices. And so, I do find it impressive but at the same time I can’t help but think that this is scary. We might not experience something like that to its extent yet, but I believe that we are experiencing this issue first hand in education. The issue we are seeing is that students are beginning to use AI to complete their assignment for them and it gets to the point where they end up not learning anything. As a result, it would affect our future because the newer generation entering the workforce would not have knowledge on certain things. Therefore, in the sense, the quote by Dr. Ross-Nazzal from his blog, “Overall, AI is evil” can be agreed upon (JRN, 2023). But in contradictory, I don’t believe AI is completely bad. I think AI has been portrayed in a bad way to where we only see that it is a negative thing. Another way to see how it is portrayed is to relate this to how nuclear power was seen. During the Cold War, nuclear power was seen as a weapon of destruction. And it is still seen as that today. But as stated in “Cold War (Overview)” by Paul Pierpao, nuclear technology is also a good thing because it benefited society by improving healthcare, energy power, etc (Pierpao 2008, 3). Which means that everything has its benefits. And so, I also do believe that AI could be beneficial to education. AI can help students by acting as a platform to where they can do extra learning. For example, it could allow students to summarize complex topics to help them understand it better. Therefore I believe that if regulated and used correctly, it could have a positive impact on our education system.

  15. AI has actually made students slackers by just depending on some Artificial intelligence program that will give you a bunch of words enough to write your essay. It would definitely affect our students and future generations who are more aware of different programs that they can use to get a bunch of dull information instead of putting some work and actually researching the topic, as a quote from Dr. Ross-Nazzal's blog post "AI is pure evil." But I also agree with Dr. Ross-Nazzal's post saying "AI is not actually our enemy", the way we use it to palla grise and not put any effort into work assignments is wrong. The most important thing is AI information can be misleading and incorrect. Dr. Ross-Nazzal's module post "Characteristics of successful people" describes the definition of maturity that "having the mental capabilities to know correct from incorrect behavior; understanding consequences of actions and inactions; taking personal responsibility for decisions, actions, and words". AI is not always a bad thing it's basically just a search engine that will give you a bunch of information almost about any topic in this world but using that information for writing essays and work assignments is a negative for sure. sometimes, I believe that it is just a way to treat our minds to not being able to think and actually being mature maybe it's an evil trap but it has also a positive side that we can use to get a lot of information. According to Dr. Ross-Nazzal's post, AI really has gotten Professors in so much trouble that almost every student is using Chat GPT to write assignments. I agree with the point that Dr. Ross-Nazzal has mentioned in the post that there are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading academic integrity.

  16. By examining AI and its technological implications on how it can be used for students to utilize as a tool to get tasks, such as written pieces done promptly, plagiarism remains to be a concern. Although AI is known to be the simplest solution for students to get their work done due to it requiring less time, it exhibits the concerning ability to instantly present the knowledge required to write on any topic of one's choosing. Students have been diverted by relying and becoming dependent upon this tool yet suffer the consequences of either getting caught or choose to be unaware on a subject that is important to a particular class, which prevents them from learning, increasing the likelihood that future students will lack creativity and be potentially lazy. Presenting the idea of humans and AI coexisting is an intriguing yet debatable topic. AI lacks the capacity for developing emotional ties, has the potential to result in employment losses, and raises issues with security and trust. On the other hand, because of its extensive understanding on a wide range of subjects, including business transformation and health issues, AI can be incredibly useful to people. Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are some of the competitors in the AI market, and American corporations' investments have helped the US outperform other countries in this area of technology. Correlating to the topic of outperforming others, the Soviet Union and United States competed in a long-lasting rivalry to create the most advanced warfare weapons, called the Arms Race. During World War II, an American physicist by the name of, J. Robert Oppenheimer developed the first atomic bomb, which was prepared for testing in 1945. The hydrogen bomb, the next weapon to compete with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs, was essentially an early development for an improved weapon. The power of the bombs to produce widespread destruction, which is viewed as intimidation, makes them both significant scientific advances that establish dominance and are used to demonstrate the value of each nation. The relationship involving different AI's gaining power among various rivals as the US and Soviet Union compete with their bombs for dominance, establishes a sense of purpose. The bomb was justified by the need to preserve lives where AI can be seen to assist humans. In conclusion, assuming dominance isn't overpowered on either party's ends, the human population and AI can continue to coexist. By choosing to view AI in a positive manner, its beneficial aspects become more apparent. It is important to reach a compromise by allowing oneself to be open-minded rather than seeing AI as the enemy as mentioned by Dr.Ross-Nazzal because doing so only causes conflict. The difficulties it causes for everyone, especially teachers and professors, can be outweighed by the genuine benefits of success AI has on society.

    1. I discovered ChatGPT last fall semester when attempting to write a philosophy paper and having a friend tell me I might improve my work by having this "chatbot transformer" write it for me. As I’ve done more research on it and heard what professors believe about it and how it affects education, I can’t help but notice how different the past is from the present. This is what we are concerned about in today's environment, but it's incredible to believe that 87 years ago, students were not misusing this type of technology, and professors were not concerned about their students cheating. During 1936, the Murray vs. Maryland case had people demanding equality for more specifically African American students. Donald Gains Murray, along with his well-educated background in law was denied an education due to being African American. Dr. James Ross Nazzal and his US History Students writes, “This did not sit well with Murray because he was an honor student from Amherst and was well qualified for admission into the law school of his choice”. Individuals from all walks of life were working hard to gain any type of educational experience; fortunately for Murray, he was able to fight back and speak up for his right to complete his law studies. “The judge found there was no need to build a separate law school for negros and ruled in favor of Murray.” Murray ended up being able to attend the University, there was no need to build a separate one. Obviously, he did not end the injustices that America was subjecting African Americans to, but he did begin to change things for those who simply desired a fair right to an education. I’ve realized with this example of a change in education how much of a difference it is with this AI issue. Individuals are misusing this privilege with the AI scandal, cheating their way through school and not working as hard or fairly as they should. It totally defeats the point of obtaining a true education. However, AI has shown to be an incredible technological advancement. I say this because, looking back in time, there's no right way to explain to a person from the 1800s how you're able to receive an answer to a question you had from an actual chatbot; it's absurd. According to Professor Ross-Nazzal, the telegraph got replaced by the telephone which initiated a new method of communication, specifically developed for business. I think that AI has been a significant technological achievement, and it certainly has a similar concept to how the telephone became a new mode of communication. They’re two very different things, but they both function as new technology that has aided our society. The telephone was a tremendous hit because it made it simpler to communicate and aided society after the Civil War. Regarding AI, it is a new technology teaching tool that has the potential to be an advantage to our lives if we can discover a way to not entirely abuse it. As I agree with Dr. James Ross Nazzal, we should not consider AI as an enemy; rather, we should work our way around it and find a way to coexist with it if we use it properly.

  18. When I first heard about AI, I thought people were exaggerating because I couldn't imagine a machine having the intelligence and capabilities to mimic human thinking. However, as I learned more about the field and witnessed the advancements in AI technology, my skepticism faded. The rapid advancement of AI has demonstrated to me that AI can indeed possess an astounding level of intelligence, far exceeding what I previously believed was possible. I'm starting to notice more AI-generated content in my daily life. For example, I began seeing AI-generated covers of songs by other artists. These AI-generated covers are increasingly similar to those created by human artists. These AI systems' level of creativity and precision is truly remarkable, blurring the line between human and machine artistry. I was also introduced to Chatgpt this semester; when I first discovered it, I was amazed, but after using it, I realized it could not replace human-written essays and papers. As you stated in your post, AI-generated essays are boring because they contain general statements and summaries. While AI technology has made significant advances in terms of intelligence, it still falls short when it comes to the creativity and critical thinking skills required for producing engaging and insightful essays. AI-generated essays lack the depth and originality that can only be achieved through human thought processes and experiences. Additionally, human-written essays have the ability to convey emotions and personal perspectives, making them more relatable and impactful to readers. AI-generated essays may lack the authenticity and unique voice that comes from an individual's personal experiences and knowledge. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the irreplaceable value of human creativity and critical thinking in producing strong and well written essays. I believe that AI has the potential to enhance the learning experience by providing personalized feedback and adaptive learning tools. However, it is important to ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly Ultimately, integrating AI into academics requires careful consideration and ethical guidelines to ensure its responsible and beneficial implementation.

  19. I believe it's important to look at AI through a broader historical lens. A tool is as beneficial or harmful as we make it, much like how the sewing machine was perceived during the Industrial Revolution.

The invention of the sewing machine stirred up similar fears among artisans, who worried their skills would be deemed obsolete. There were concerns about job loss, and a sense that craftsmanship would be replaced by mindless, mechanized production. However, as history has shown us, society adapted. The sewing machine didn't render tailors and seamstresses irrelevant; rather, it transformed their roles and enhanced productivity. It allowed for the democratization of fashion and improved standards of living.

Similarly, generative AI like ChatGPT is not designed to replace intellectual labor, but rather to assist and accelerate it. The cases of plagiarism described were regrettable instances of misuse rather than indicative evidence of the tool's inherent nature.

We should also recognize that every technological leap comes with its challenges (consider a more recent example of the smart-phone and the problem of the decreasing attention span). The sewing machine, despite its numerous benefits, did lead to certain socioeconomic shifts and inequalities. if AI is used irresponsibly, it can lead to unintended consequences and corrupt systems that have been in place for decades. The potential for misuse, the threat to traditional academic practices, and the broader implications for the labor market are all valid concerns.

Adding another point and straying away from academia, just as the Gilded Age marked a transformative period in America, the rise of AI could herald a similar era of change. The Gilded Age brought prosperity but also disparity, much like the effects AI could have across various economic sectors. This shows the need for us, especially younger generations, to become comfortable with AI. Instead of resisting this technology, understanding and effectively utilizing AI can help us maximize opportunities and minimize potential risks.

In conclusion don’t think AI is inherently good or evil —it's a new tool and its effect on our society will be determined by how we choose to use it. By looking back we can gain valuable insight that will help us navigate the wave of technological change we're currently experiencing.

Like Dr. JRN mentioned, AI is here to stay and some will choose to rely on it more than others. I think rather than enforcing rules against it, we should give guidance to students about how to use it appropriately and let them achieve new heights.

  20. If you asked me about AI this time last year I wouldn't be able to give a definition, that's to tell you how much it's grown in the last year. I didn't really know about ChatGpt until I started struggling with my college assignments and my roommate told me about it. At first I was very excited that most of my problems with my assignments were solved, but what became a one time thing became an addiction, the simplest assignments ever just became the hardest because I decided not to use my brain and would rather take the easy way out. Yes, it has its positive effects but not as much as its negative effects especially on education. If everyone keeps using ChatGpt to cheat their way out of school, are we really learning?. We are the future generation that's meant to help the world heal, we might think “it's just one assignment lets just use chat gpt” but what if thats what is required to save one’s life, you're in surgery and you're trying to remember something that you could have read to solve an assignment but you didn’t and reality kicks in. Dr. Ross-Nazzal says in his blog “I think what we cannot do with AI is ignore it, sweep it under the rug” and he is totally right because no matter how much you try to pretend AI doesn’t affect the society it does. The first african-american president of the United States was Barack Obama. Imagine explaining that to people in the 70s or 80s, that wouldn't make sense to them at all, we would be the ones looking crazy, or explaining how a phone is used or laptop or even ChapGpt. I would be lying if I said I didn't think about using chat gpt to do this assignment, so what changed? reading all the comments on Dr. Ross-Nazzal blog and realizing what they all said was true and I was too deep into it. I have mixed feelings about ChatGpt. It might be both good and evil but who are we to judge really? Yes, it's difficult for professors but aren’t they also using it to check assignments and even grade them, also ChatGpt is really wrong for some assignments. In conclusion Dr. Ross-Nazzal was right in his blog when he said “AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one” so maybe i could keep lying to myself and say i'm a victim of AI but am i really?.

  21. I totally agree with your argument about the misuse of AI or Artificial Intelligence. Violating academic integrity through plagiarism with the help of AI is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. But, on the other hand, Artificial intelligence is a tool which can be used for both positive and negative purposes, depending on the intentions and the purpose of the user. AI can be beneficent to a very high extent by enhancing the accessibility to multiple sources of information which will increase the efficiency as well as the quality of education. As a result removing or eliminating AI from our lives will be extremely damaging. Also, as Dr. Ross-Nazzal mentioned in his article “So, anyhow, about AI” that “There are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor.” To address the issue of plagiarism, it's commendable that you provided your students with an opportunity to rectify their mistakes and learn from them. Through this strategy, students are more encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and to believe in academic integrity. Furthermore, I really liked the concept of transforming the curriculum and assignments toward more critical thinking, design, and creativity in order to limit the misuse of AI. However, I also believe that relying solely on detection software to catch AI-generated plagiarism may become less effective as AI models evolve and become more complex. In conclusion, it is essential to strike a balance between embracing the potential benefits of AI in education and addressing the challenges it presents. By adopting proactive measures, such as integrating AI education into the curriculum, promoting critical thinking, and fostering responsible AI use, we can navigate the evolving landscape of AI and education while upholding academic integrity.

  23. AI has completely consumed the academic world. Its prevalence is throughout homework, exams, and writing essays. Although it has advanced areas of academic research by allowing people to access information from various sources quickly, its purpose as a support system in education needs to be revised. AI has fallen into the wrong hands of cheating students, as now students can use the software to generate essays for them or give them automated responses on assignments. Academia has transformed from a test of knowledge to how well someone can bypass AI detection. Introducing AI into academia is monumental as it creates bias discrimination because AI mainly uses general information to target big-picture things. With this, discrimination and marginalization can happen to minority groups.
This evokes the idea of the civil rights movement in education, the Murray v. Maryland case of 1936, where the University of Maryland's law school denied Donald Gains Murray's admission because he was African American. The judge ruled in favor of Murray which not only allowed Murray to become "the first African American to graduate from the University's law school" but set a precedent for others to fight discrimination in education. Without Murray's decision to appeal in court, present-day education could have been entirely different. In other words, to ensure academic validity, proper measures must be taken to ensure that AI does not become a tool that puts students at an unfair advantage.
AI is inevitable; it just needs to be contained. For example, the United States (US) joining World War 2 to stop the communist takeover was why Russia did not regain control of Europe, China did not take Southeast Asia, and ultimately stop until the beginning of World War 3. Without intervention, the world would be drastically different than it is today. Taking lessons from the past, people must be proactive regarding issues like these because although AI can seem like a positive way of changing education, it can quickly consume academia. Hence, before people can no longer keep up with this constantly evolving technology, problems that arise must be quickly addressed.

  24. When it comes to AI, artificial intelligence, there is no doubt the rapid growth of this technology will reach every crevice of work and play in this world. There are predictions that AI will take over career professions, education, and a lot more. Naturally, AI can be misused and taken advantage of in various fields, which makes it be perceived as something mostly negative. For example, students using AI to cheat their way through school, using online robot systems to write and solve assignments for them.
The first time I heard of ChatGPT was around last school year and I didn’t find it interesting. I simply ignored it because it was something so unfathomable and futuristic to me. However, AI is something I can’t escape because it has found its way into various social media apps and only recently am I seeing the potential and future AI can path for us. Honestly, it is something that makes me feel uneasy since it’s not a natural and true way of doing things. Especially when it comes to school, using something like ChatGPT feels dishonest and unusual. It makes sense that detection software, like GPTZero, has come out and developed to detect if a body of work is plagiarized by an AI technology, but AI itself is something unpredictable and can grow within itself. In Dr. Ross-Nazzal’s blog post “So, Anyhow, about AI,” he states, “However, I think what we cannot do with AI is ignore it, sweep it under the rug, police it into a SuperMax, or exile it to Guantanamo Bay.” This statement goes hand in hand with the fact that AI isn’t going away anytime soon, and it will continue to grow and rise in power, so we simply can’t ignore the direction its heading.

  25. With the development and widespread use of AI technology, more and more students are utilizing AI to complete their assignments. This approach has certain benefits, such as improving efficiency and reducing time constraints. However, it also has significant limitations. For example, regarding some tasks that require creative thinking, critical ideas, or judgements, relying on AI is not reliable. In fact, even if AI could provide the answer, that answer is often highly controversial. As Dr. JRN indicated in his blog “So, anyhow, about AI,” (2023), “Very little detail. General statements. Not many specifics. No analysis. Just dull, linear narratives.” Indeed, AI can generate a complete essay within as short as 3 seconds after being provided a topic. But after carefully reviewing, you will find the content lacks human subjective judgment and emotional nuances, which makes it easy to detect that the article was not written by an individual but AI. Coins have two sides. On the other hand, it could help build up the writing skills for a beginner like me. The first time I heard about ChatGPT was two months ago. We were trying to compose an official email and send it to our management levels, my colleague introduced ChatGPT to me. After I completed the entire email, ChatGPT helped me check grammar and spelling issues and provides some targeted suggestions. Then I submitted a perfect official email. In this way, I think it is a good helper. It could help build up and improve writing skills for a beginner.

  26. The first time I heard a teacher openly talk about using Ai was when I took a government class. My professor at the time openly spoke about her experiences with how many of her students used Ai to write their essays about personal experiences. I laughed with my professor about how foolish it was to use Ai, and this last impression soon followed me throughout my first year of college. I would now see a box that needed to be checked before submitting an assignment to guarantee authenticity. Now that I see this box more and more, it has made me realize how much of a problem Ai is in academic studies. Using Ai can impact a student in the long term by giving many students an easy solution that will benefit them now instead of in the future. Studying and perseverance are skills that many students should develop that will help them land their future job. Ai is ruining the chance for students to learn and develop that skill. The easy way out should never be the option, and sadly it is forming a bad habit among people. Ai will not simply go away because of its negative effect on academics. Ai software programs become more and more advanced to fight back against cheating. As Dr. Ross-Nazzal stated, “AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one and when we do, we look upon students' use of AI as something ‘criminal.’” Ai is not necessarily a bad thing, however, if students were to misuse it for cheating then it would be a weapon of destruction for students' future. Ai has been given a bad reputation by teachers and will continue to have a bad reputation if students continue their behavior of abusing the power Ai has.

  27. There were days when people saw the takeover of AI in movies and mocked it saying it would not be a real thing, until the one of the most advanced AI, Chatgpt came to the known of the public. It has truly shown what AI can actually do and the portrayal of it in the movies was not just a sci-fi fantasy but a peep into what the future holds. So many companies/organizations are now trying to use AI to get their jobs done. It has begun, the takeover of AI. The line between reality and artificially generated has begun to blur. People used to prasie art created by an artist but are now fascinated by AI genrated pictures, audio clips and videos. AI has grown to such an extent that it has no bounds now, it can do anything, be anything. While AI has its own negatives it cannot be ignored that it has helped various industres including education. I completely agree with Dr. Nazzal that " AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one ". While it can provoke students to use AI to get their assignments done, if used within the class as a part of cirriculum it can be used by students to explore new ideas, ideas and situations a human cant think of but an AI can generate by its several billion combinations. A lot of times students face issues in their academics and is not always feasble to contact teachers or get the answers online if it is a very specific issue. AI in this matter can be extremely helpful as it can be always accesed and has the solutions to most problems. Being an engineering student myself I can assert that ChatGPT is an extremely helpful tool. It all depends on how it is beign used. I cannot count the number of times I have asked ChatGPT to review my engineering work and tell me what is causing the error as it a tedious task to self review to identify errors. Unfortunately it is not a human and is constantly evolving and hence unpredictable. It is a very helpful tool in several industries right now and it can only be hoped to stay that way for quite some time.

  29. Artificial intelligence, AI for short, is the new future technology that does have its cons and pros because of how smart computers have become compared to humans. One of the negativities of Artificial intelligence is that people can abuse it to achieve certain goals effortlessly, especially when it comes to the academic environment. Students in high school or college can now cheat very easily by literally asking AI to answer their assignment questions, or even write an essay for them. Which is the equivalent of using or even cheating with Google but without doing any research. This bypasses the learning process of a student and defeats the purpose of getting an education itself. Furthermore, it is also hard to counter AI in the academic field. The reason is that AI was trained by lots of text written by people themselves. Which makes it harder to spot which was written by AI and which was written by people, or students. This can lead to false AI detection and can possibly cause a bigger problem for the students.
Although AI seems extremely harmful in the academic environment, with the right use, AI can be a great tool to help people in other careers. For example, AI can be trained to help people to find jobs easier by getting most of the results into one place . Another example of AI usage is to use it as an advantage, not a solution. Jobs such as programmers can use AI to get a better understanding of other people’s code a bit easier. In my own experience, they only work half of the time, but it did a great job of dropping some clues along the way, which was helpful.

  31. AI intelligence has rapidly become a popular tool in the academic setting. I was one of the people who learned about it a lot of time after it started to become a thing. One of my friends from college told me about it, and how it can be used to finish your homework. I was astonished by it; after conducting some study on the well-known ChatGPT, I was hooked by all the things that this software was capable of doing. AI algorithms have made their way into the world of education, and they are nearly hard to get rid of. As technology evolves, higher education institutions feel obligated to adapt and discover strategies for dealing with AI in order to maintain academic integrity. While AI is a positive and strong technology when utilized correctly. Students try to take advantage of it, making it tough not just for the school but also for themselves. If students only rely on the usage of AI to make research projects, essays, and any kind of assignments. It becomes an addiction, and it is harmful to the student's learning process. People quit thinking critically and behave with the excuse of meeting deadlines instead of learning. I feel that schools should provide more opportunities for students to utilize AI responsibly rather than completely forbid it. This will only worsen situations, and lose the opportunity to give students the chance to use this tool in a way that enhances their learning experiences, rather than just “cheating”. Good reflection from the blog. Even if AI has a negative side effect, it is important to focus on the positive potential it might provide and develop methods that encourage students to not rely on this technology more than necessary.

  32. Many of the things we have today, such as automobiles invented by Henry Ford and the lightbulb invented by Thomas Edison, were not made by just them alone. They took what other people invented and made it better so that it would be universally applicable and commercially successful. In addition, Hollywood has helped shape popular culture and the IBM 360 has helped Steve Jobs create the personal computer we all use today. Similarly, AI has grown to be what it is today through the work and contributions of many people. The creation of AI has helped many engineers and programmers alike in advancing and developing technologies to further the growth of current society. It has also assisted in research on the development of new medicines and treatments for diseases. Although AI has its benefits in society, it also has its negatives. Students have begun to use AI to help them with their schoolwork such as writing their essays for them with a given prompt. This way of using AI, as Dr. Ross-Nazzal states in his blog “So, Anyhow, about AI,” is evil for it interferes with students learning. The skills that these students could be developing such as analysis and critical thinking are not being developed since they are not trying to do the assignment themselves. Since AI will continue to be used in society for further development, the only thing we can do is bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor as Dr. Ross-Nazzal states. By strategically incorporating AI into the classroom environment, we will be able to help students in developing their skills as well as prepare them for a world where technology will become integral in our future.

  33. Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is a technology in which a computerized robot does work for humans. It is basically a robot who does everything that a normal human would do. I still remember when one of my friends introduced me to ChatGPT because I needed to write an essay on revolutionary war. I was amazed someone could write an essay for me because I was too lazy to write one. I am not going to lie, I did use ChatGPT, but I did not turn in my assignment because as I was reading the essay, something just did not sound right to me. I felt like I was stealing someone else's work and quotes and putting it as mine. Since that day, I never used any of the acritical intelligence because I kept myself in place of the people whose work ChatGPT was stealing and not giving credit. How frustrating that sounds. However, there are many ways we can use artificial intelligence in a positive way such as just by asking what the word means as Dr JRN stated, “Let us identify the positive or beneficial aspects of AI and put those to the test.” Also, “There are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor.” Misusing artificial intelligence to complete your homework such as ChatGPT or GPTzero etc is called cheating and it is also unacceptable. We should not be using something that steals another person’s work and do not give proper credit to the author instead we should do our own homework by ourselves

  35. The introduction and insurgence of AI have swept the nation this past year in how it is used positively and negatively. I think something important when it comes to AI and the classroom or education system is to uphold the integrity of the education system as well as find ways to integrate this new way of life. Understanding that the use of AI to outright do assignments is wrong and blatant in its misuse but also understand that under the right lens, it can be used to help, encourage, or even better assignments quality. A workplace example of this would have to deal with my current internship where we have a lot of moving parts when it comes to data entry and certain processes that can be tedious at times.
Ways AI relieves the stress that comes with it would be finding ways to streamline and help with data entry that would take twice or three times the amount. Something to highlight as we talk about what AI is doing is that the internet itself is barely over 40 years old, and yet we’re at the point where we can’t live without it. Dr. Ross-Nazzel states in the blog post “So, anyhow, about AI” when it comes to software to counter AI like ChatGPT, he mentions its counterpart GPTZero, an effort made by someone to provide some sort of check and balance to a concept that can run rampant if unchecked.
When reading “Give Me Liberty” by Eric Foner as one of the OER Textbooks Chapters 7-15 onwards depict the creation and the history of America leading up to the Civil War. Something to highlight in that was the creation of the Constitution during the convention and how the creation of something new, yet powerful needs all these checks and balances in order to maintain stability and peace after learning what that power looks like unchecked. Overall, AI has proved to be a disrupter to society and how education takes place, but I see within that disruption, something good about how we can utilize it properly in the future and what that looks like.

  36. AI may be beneficial in terms of a student’s perspective but this lessens the reason to even be a student. Producing genuine output to turn in for a grade is one duty to receive an education- but what if this production of an essay or a discussion isn’t made by the person behind the screen but INSIDE? AI is a scary but impressive development made by tech-savvies. Although the motive to make this software may be harmless, others can take advantage of it- this is the basis of every good thing made in this world. As many may think that it is still early for AI to be eradicated from all platforms, Dr. JRN is right in his discussion; it is far too late for us to sweep this finding under the rug. If AI was banned in all cases around the country, this does not guarantee that there aren’t hidden pathways to access it again. A correlation to this can be found in Dr. JRN’s module 9 lecture, “Post Factual America.” One instance that stuck out and resonated with this discussion was how Neonazis were ultimately defeated, but evidently, they still exist to this day. If Neonazis can still have a following after their cruel and sinister acts during World War II, the creators of AI can have backup files and distribute them illegally, making the ban impertinent. Furthermore, the usefulness of AI may let it stay for a while. An example of an invention that changed the ways of life was Aunt Jemima due to its efficiency in cooking, stating that pancake-in-a-box-kit showcased that “American pace was speeding up.” How this correlates back to AI is about their effectiveness in terms of what they specialize in; one allows a student to proficiently produce schoolwork while the other allows American families to proficiently make breakfast. Although this fascinating software may not stay for eternity, evolutions and updates are highly likely as time passes, making restrictive developments null. The only solution to eventually stop AI is to learn how to adapt to it. Just like Dr. JRN said in his last lines, getting along with AI will allow us to use it for good deeds instead of focusing on its role in academic integrity.

  37. Over the past couple of years, the topic of AI has gained significant attention and interest. However, until one morning in 2023, during my first-period class, I hadn't explored the subject in depth. It was during this class that I overheard fellow students discussing an AI called ChatGPT and praising its impressive website. Appealed by their conversation, I soon found myself submerged with frequent ads on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, tempting me to try it out for myself. Driven by curiosity, I, like many others, decided to give it a shot. Once I began exploring ChatGPT, I was genuinely impressed by its capabilities. However, alongside that amazement, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The thought occurred to me that students might begin relying on AI tools like ChatGPT to effortlessly achieve high grades, potentially diminishing the recognition and value of the hard work put in by those of us dedicated to education. Fortunately, as Dr. Ross-Nazzal mentioned, “We were introduced to AI programs that can determine whether the work was generated by ChatGPT or some other AI.” That being said, it's important not to dismiss AI outright. While recognizing the potential concerns, it's crucial to acknowledge the positive aspects and potential benefits of AI when used ethically. For instance, individuals can leverage AI to shed light on new ideas or gain valuable feedback. So, it is a development of technology and could be very beneficial to society if used in a proper ethical way. Instead of viewing AI as an enemy, as Dr. Ross-Nazzal mentioned, it's essential to foster an open-minded approach and seek a middle ground that avoids unnecessary conflicts. Another invention that greatly impacted the education system is the birth of the internet, “January 1, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet.” However, even today, there is controversy surrounding the potential dangers of the internet, especially for young teens. It is widely acknowledged that the internet can be a dark place, leading to issues such as cyberbullying, depression, and invasions of privacy. However, when used ethically and responsibly, the internet
can also be extremely beneficial, particularly in the field of education. The internet has become a valuable asset within the education system, enabling students to expand their learning beyond the confines of traditional classrooms. It provides numerous educational opportunities and resources. For instance, students can conduct research on various subjects, access online courses, utilize educational videos, learn effective time management and organizational skills, engage in language learning, prepare for tests, and access credible news sources. Overall, by using these resources and encouraging responsible usage, students can benefit from the educational opportunities available online.

  38. Since most people use ChatGPT to copy and paste their work as they work on their essays, AI has been known as evil, especially in the workplace and in schools. It is not beneficial when extensive artificial intelligence is applied in an environment that harms the client. Health insurance software that tries to predict when medical procedures are affordable could save direct expenses, but this could result in avoidable mortality. However, there are a number of benefits to using AI. Things like productivity, efficient use of assets, medical diagnostics, and targeted advertising have already benefited from technology. One of the top large-scale applications of AI that I'm aware of is StitchFix. The company has transformed how we shop for clothing online by utilizing artificial intelligence.
In contrast to humans, artificial intelligence systems are never boring or distracting. They have a considerably higher likelihood of giving accurate results almost always since they can take in much more information and consistently adhere to the guidelines for analyzing the data and drawing conclusions. Super Cruise, a feature on some General Motors vehicles, makes sure the driver is always focused on the road by using artificial intelligence. As more and more computers develop artificial intelligence capabilities, they will be able to perform increasingly repetitive activities that take up human time.
AI use has the potential to address social issues and decrease inequality. Consider working together to upgrade the country's still poor healthcare system in West Africa. This study makes use of a smartphone app that scans babies for birth defects using computer vision technologies. Even though the majority of AI's beneficial applications originate outside the purview of researchers and developers, it is through these channels that AI concepts come to life. In other words, in addition to considering what their work is, professionals should consider who will use it. The decisions made by leaders on the proper application of new technology have significant effects on both organizations and society. Their decisions will have a significant impact on how they conduct business.

  40. ChatGPT has become an increasing prominent software that students have used to cheat on essay-based assignments. As a result, another AI was created to help detect when a student uses AI to cheat on their assignment. I do believe that AI has a place to be beneficial to human. For example, if a student is studying for a test, they can ask ChatGPT to draft a few sample questions for them. This helps the student further understand material without them cheating. In the Prologue of Our Story: An Ancillary to US History, discusses a quote by Dan Rather which reads: “these are not normal times. these are extraordinary times. and [they] call for extraordinary measures.” AI is an unprecedented advancement in history. As a result, it calls for new “measures” and “rules” to ensure that it does not adversely change humankind. Dr. James Nazzal also mentions the debate between Continuity or Change. In unprecedented times, do we ignore the AI revolution and let it reduce humankinds’ potential or do we create healthy boundaries where AI can benefit humans. AI has the power to pass entrance exams to highly sought after careers that could leave many humans without a job. The constant need to have technology replace the human mind is dangerous. This also begs the question on how important creative work is made by humans such as writing and painting in the technology age. I believe that creative work is still important even if it might not have monetary value. It is a humankinds’ decision to apply value on the hard work of humans.

  41. In my point of view, AI is the most complex thing us human created. In coding, each input code has an output code; same as cause and effect, but what makes AI program so different from other program, is the “learning” features. I air-quoted the word learning because an AI does not have its own awareness as human do. Unlike AI, as we grasp and maintain new knowledge through education, which is being taught in the same, if not similar ways; we still recite that knowledge in our own, unique ways. For an AI, the input is feeding the program masses of information, and the output is them, regurgitating the information, with little to no emotions, it just spits out facts after facts with evidence to support it; not even fun facts, everyone loves fun facts, it is informative and not boring. So, maintaining that knowledge is much more effortless. However, there are AI programs that is more human than the AI I described above, people love this AI programing, especially gamers that wants immersive gaming. An AI programs in those types of games, are design to learn through patter recognition based on how the player interact within the virtual world; to illustrate, an NPC (non-playable character) might get progressively more aggressive towards the player if the player has done something that the game “considered” bad, and vice versa if the player stops doing those bad things. Game designers can create an AI so complex that it could even act like a player character, it can speak, act and think for itself in dire situation in the game, according to the programing of course. AI cannot become self-aware, ever! No matter how complicated the coding and the networking of those codes are, we cannot replicate a human brain that has the ability to think for itself and most importantly, the human emotions.

  42. I am a firm believer that the use of AI can be dire to the different aspects of social life that we as individuals reside in. Now, there was not much commotion or controversy going on about AI software at the beginning of this year especially in schools, technology, and other social aspects of humanity. However when it did, Artificial Intelligence took the world by storm. I believe that the concept of Artificial Intelligence is so incredibly powerful that it is almost scary. When reading about the amount of professors who actually did get documents submitted that were fully written by ChatGPT, it was astonishing to me. If we are being completely vulnerable here, I knew not too explore too much into AI softwares when I heard about it knowing that it would just lead to me to wanting to actually use it. Out of nowhere, AI seemed to just have expanded. From seeing it be added to social media apps to watching about it in an episode of South Park, it was truly terrifying to see. Now I know I must look at both sides of something like this but in all honesty it is hard to do. I’d like to think about the amount of technological advancements we’ve made in the past 10 years and see how far we’ve came. Now there’s one difference about the previous phones, laptops and tablets compared to now; the present ones are nothing like we’ve ever seen before. Each year passing by, we keep on advancing to new and better things. I mean right now I’m writing this assignment with my voice. So what’s to say AI can’t reach a point of advancement, that educators are unable to detect cheating. If “My AI” on Snapchat can empathize with me when I say the phrase “I am sad” , a few more years it will be like talking to a regular friend over the phone having humanistic characteristics that it lacks today. We live in a generation where AI is normalized to a state where individuals lose all sense of ethics and moral values because of its accessibility. Dr. Ross-Nazzal said, “Overall, AI is evil,” and frankly I must agree with him.

  43. As an Artificial Intelligence skeptic, it is disheartening to hear about the instances of plagiarism encountered with students using ChatGPT to generate their assignments. As a student and future physician, maintaining academic integrity and thinking critically are essential goals of mine and using AI to complete an assignment undermines both of those goals. As Dr. Jim Ross-Nazzal mentions in his "Post Factual America" lecture, the world and internet continue to be filled with "alternative facts" or falsehoods, which ChatGPT may include in its answers to a user's prompts.

I found it very interesting that you and your colleagues have already had the opportunity to engage in professional development opportunities regarding AI because it is so new and the turnaround time in tackling the issue of plagiarism in this way is quite remarkable. As quoted in the textbook Our Story: An Ancillary To US History's Prologue, “These are not normal times. These are extraordinary times. And [they] call for extraordinary measures.” Though I believe that it is imperative that educators understand the potential abuses and challenges associated with AI, the availability and use of detection software like GPTZero are not surprising – if AI can write about almost anything, why wouldn't AI be able to also detect that writing?

This new technology poses a significant challenge in upholding academic integrity, and provides a complex situation, but as mentioned, rather than treating students' use of AI as a criminal act, it is essential to engage in a constructive dialogue about the ethical implications and encourage responsible AI use.

  44. The origin of AI has left everyone in captivation. As far as using it, I think it can be used for productivity but also plagiarism. Copying someone's notes and ideas does not sit right with me at least. It definitely is really popular within education circle. Not to forget AI has been really helpful for researchers and scientists in carrying out their work but it has also developed users to unlawful benefit from it for their schoolwork including essays, notes and so much more. If they are not copying it as it is, the use of a paraphraser is even more problematic. It transforms it into more deceitful use. Back in the days when we would google stuff up and then have to make our own research, I remember it was much harder because you still had to go through stuff unlike ChatGPT. It just makes it easier. As Dr. Ross Nazzal describes, "However, I think what we cannot do with AI is ignore it, sweep it under the rug, police it into a SuperMax, or exile it to Guantanamo Bay. There are ways to being AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor". (So, anyhow, about AI. 2023). After reading this, the only way to go about this is through synchronizing with it and not using it illegally to cheat.

  45. The dangers of AI in a classroom setting pose significant challenges for both educators and students alike. According to Dr. James Ross – Nazzal1 “Students are using A.I. to cheat.”, students can now take full advantage of the modern aid approach that has come from A.I powered tools to help paraphrase and essentially write entire essays without being involved into making it themselves. However, students who use A.I. should be cautious on how much help they receive from their preferred AI tools because it can now be counted as plagiarism or academic misconduct. Dr. James Ross – Nazzal has also stated “There are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor.”, which I actually believe to be true if we ethically approach academic endeavors. A.I. can help enhance and support learning by simply getting help starting on generating ideas and drafts to the task at hand.

A major part of the A.I. problem is that there seems to be a ton of pushback from those who teach for a living. We all had teachers who grew up in an era before technology, yet we never hear them coming up with ways that their students can effectively use A.I. in an academic setting to help promote students' educational goals. In Kornyo(2021), the author mentions “The advancement of AI has redefined and reified the contemporary world of technology with new architectures, design an application as a solution to recurring problems, challenges, patterns, among others”2. A.I. can be the tool that can enrich the student and teachers by organizing personalized lesson plans, intelligent tutoring, tool accessibility to students with disabilities like speech to text or text to speech.

A.I. can make learning extremely accessible for anyone regardless of socioeconomic status, education is a right for anyone who wishes to acquire it. In U.S. History (2008), Lyndon Johnson passed the Elementary and Secondary education act of 1965 which provided massive funding to public schools3. Imagine what the world would be like if only rich folk got to go to school. A.I. certainly will help remedy some of that academic hunger around the world.

  46. The increasing capabilities of AI is incredibly intimidating. In previous academic settings I have been tasked to explore the abilities of programs like ChatGPT to help discuss the moral implications of having access to such technology in college settings. Right now Artificial Intelligence is almost advanced enough to be undetectable, but luckily there are programs like GPTZero that can help educators separate authentic work from generated responses. However, as Dr. JRN explained in his post, “...harder-to-detect AI is on the horizon and those will indeed write more thoughtful, meaningful, and insightful papers. At that point, we are in deep kimchi.” Just like any other scientific advancement in history, the initial presence of new technology is jarring. For example with the agricultural revolution that occurred in the late 1800s and continued into the early 1900s, came the transition from manual labor into machine farming. The implementation of this new technology had a vast impact on the agricultural industry, leading to a tripled number of farms, lowered prices, and increased yields. But advancements like this can also have repercussions like the squeezing out of small producers. I think that the same pattern will be found with the expansion of the capabilities of AI like ChatGPT. For the time being, it is being exploited by students, but the possibility that it can and will be used in a more beneficial and productive manner in the future is undeniable. Artificial Intelligence, if used correctly, could become a tool for a more tailored educational experience, could reach areas of the world previously untouched by traditional methods of education, and more. Similar to any other scientific advancement in history, it would be negligent to focus on the current problems with AI and deny the revolutionary impact it could come to have on society.

  47. There are instances where AI is helpful, but there are also instances where it is harmful. I use Bard as Google on steroids and think it is great for that. For example, I was trying to change my own cabin air filter in my Toyota Camry. I asked Bard how to change it and it gave me step by step instructions which helped me change the filter. While there is a risk that some of the information it gives is not accurate, I have found it to be usually very helpful and correct. I think AI can be very helpful for learning because it can quickly and easily explain things. Using AI for essays and submitting work is not good, however, because it can mean that students are not actually learning. They are just doing what they need to do in order to submit the assignment, but they are not getting any knowledge. This is not new. Before, people used to copy from books or articles. Then Google came out, so people copied from Google and the Internet. Now, people are trying to copy using AI. Even though the technologies are changing, people’s intentions are the same. What is most important is realizing why it is harmful and not ethical to cheat and realizing that AI is actually a tool which can be very helpful if we use it correctly.

  48. AI technology is a powerful yet volatile tool that has proven to be especially problematic in recent times. It seems a modern concern that misuse of AI has led to increased rates of plagiarism, and indirectly compromised the academic integrity of many students. Though as stated by Dr. Ross-Nazzal, “There are ways to bring AI into the classroom without degrading the academic integrity of the course or its rigor”. (Nazzal, Jim R. "So, Anyhow, about AI." (2023)). While the fear of AI degrading the quality of education is a valid one, I agree with Dr. Ross-Nazzal that we should not demonize AI. The truth about Artificial Intelligence like Chat-GPT, is that it’s here and it’s here to stay.

AI is like an untamable beast in the sense that it’s improving every day, and Chat-GPT is just the beginning. Chat GPT 3.5 release on November 30th, 2022. Not even 5 months later, the far more advanced model Chat-GPT 4.0 was released, a model capable of logic and reasoning, which allows it to understand highly complex problems and create more articulate responses with whatever input it receives. The improvement between model 3.5 and 4 is drastic, with a highly increased quality of responses; This improvement took only 4 months, showing the rapid rate that AI improves at. If we learned anything from the industrial revolution, this kind of progress does not just stop, and instead leads to the next step in our natural progression as a society. “Though industrialization caused many long-term positives, it did cause problems in the short-term.” (2011. The Guilded Age & The Progressive Era (1877-1917)). We see the same pattern in the progression of AI, where we suffer as a society from the short-term consequences of unstable technology. The path forward with AI is scary and unpredictable, due to the lack of control or regulation on such a volatile force. Therefore, we should learn from the past, and treat AI as a force to be handled with great care, rather than something to be feared and abused.

  49. Since the introduction of artificial intelligence Through sites such as ChatGPT, Bard, ETC. there have been many mixed reviews on the dangers that it poses the education system. As much as this new found technology could be used to benefit learning with new methods, students have found a way to take advantage of this system by using it to cheat and plagiarize work. However, with all the cons that AI has it also comes with some pros including the fact that this new innovation in technology can automate tasks that are currently done by humans, freeing up time and resources for other activities. This can lead to improved productivity and efficiency. The creation of AI correlates to what Dr. Ross-Nazzal states in his lecture “Rise of Modern America”. In this JRN states the creation of the railroad connecting the east coast and west coast right before the Civil War will result in mass production, mass distribution, and created unlimited markets. This shows the endless amount of possibility that railroads created and AI hold that same possibility in terms of education. The situation regarding AI reminds me of The Scopes Monkey Trial where John Scopes, a biology teacher was accused of violating a state law that prohibited the teaching of Charles Darwin’s evolution in public schools. This trial pitted two opposing worldviews against each other, one side believing that only teachings with Christian views should be taught and the other believing that scientific facts are just as important. The book “OUR STORY: AN ANCILLARY TO US HISTORY” states how the end of Scopes trial concludes that “even though evolution went against people’s religious beliefs it should not be held from others because everyone can form their own opinion”. Just like with the introduction of AI some believe that it can be used to cheat the school system while others believe that it can be used as a tool to advance the way we learn. Prohibiting something that can change how we view education shouldn’t be banned, it should be used to advance the next generation of students. As Dr. Ross-Nazzal states in his blog post “So, anyhow, about AI”, “AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one”. Meaning that if we continue to paint AI as the villain then that’s what it will become, but instead we should find ways to implement it into our education and “coexist”.

  51. It’s crazy to see how advanced technology has become, I honestly didn’t know much about ChatGPT until one of my professors commented about it and I also saw it in social media, TikTok specifically and it continues to be a hot topic. Now it seems that everyone is using AI filters that show pictures of how you would look old, younger, pregnant, and so many more. And I’m sure there is many more ways AI is being used that I’m still unaware of. But regarding education, I agree with Dr. Ross-Nazzal, instead of seeing the negatives of having AI around we should focus on the great things we could use it to expand our knowledge. A small step to accomplishing this could be that teachers and professors could use AI generated essays as examples to students on what not to write and to identify the errors of a broad and vague essay. As an education major, I think this will help students with their cognitive skills and the teachers with their lesson planning. I think that as humans, the creators of this amazing artificial intelligence technology, we will be able to figure out ways that we can use while not affecting the knowledge growth of this and the generations to come. The rise of artificial intelligence can be compared to the Enlightenment in Europe, new ideas and theories were brought to the table and “challenged the order” that is what AI is doing in education today. This can become a learning experience for everyone.

  52. Why is AI, artificial intelligence, a big problem in education? Well, AI can be very helpful, but at the same time it can be a hard time in learning. AI can help a lot in understanding certain topics, for example history, and it can help you in other ways which create a big problem in education. According to Dr. James Ross-Nazzal in So, Anyhow, about AI, " AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one and when we do, we look upon students' use of AI as something "criminal"." There are various student whether in high school or college who talk about ChatGPT, and how wonderful it is and how easy it makes your class. But honestly, is it wonderful when you're straight off copying AI? Or should they feel not "smart enough" to use ChatGPT, instead of reading and doing the work which will help you more than using an app that may give you a bit outdated work. Just because it is AI, doesn't mean everything will be 100% correct. And nowadays, teachers/professors have found a way to detect if it's AI, and they will have consequences due to using AI, which is considered as cheating and plagiarism, which is not tolerated. Yes, AI is very helpful, but you should use it "correctly" and not take advantage of it. AI, shouldn't be used as a way to complete the work and not understand what you're doing. I am a bit against students who use ChatGPT or other AI apps and use them as a cheat "sheet" in order to just complete the work, because at the end of the day you're not learning.

Artificial intelligence has created a remarkable impact in different areas, including academia. I did not know about AI and ChatGPT until recently.
After researching, I discovered that AI technology allows a computer to think and respond almost as a human. Therefore, some college students use ChatGPT to write essays, do exams, and do other assignments, which is a clear example of cheating and a violation of academic integrity. AI technology could be beneficial if we keep the balance and do not misuse it. However, this technology has advantages, as students can gain new knowledge about different topics by searching in ChatGPT. Nevertheless, it has a negative side as well.
In my point of view, students who use AI technology to write essays and do exams, are the ones who think that ChatGPT helps them, but they may be wrong. Seeking for a ready essay, coping, and pasting that has a highly negative effect on the way we do critical thinking. If we analyze this situation, it is connected to the " I can't” statement. It is best for students to believe in their abilities to complete any task without cheating and violating academic integrity or using AI technology. As Dr. Ross-Nazzal mentioned, it is a matter of believing. The “I can't" is defeatist.
Students should believe in their ability and develop necessary skills such as writing skills, think critically. By doing so they are more likely to respect the academic honesty. So, I firmly believe that Artificial intelligence and its widespread use by students in order to cheat is unacceptable.

  54. I think AI, if left unchecked, has the potential to do great harm to our society. ChatGPT is a workaround for students that will likely fade away soon, as it is incredibly easy to circumvent. Programs such as GPTZero are improving by the day in order to detect AI writing, and professors can simply have the final exam be taken in person, making it almost impossible to cheat using AI. When discussing AI, it is not ChatGPT that we should focus on, but more harmful ways of using AI such as fake voice recordings or fake AI-generated explicit photos of real people. AI could realistically soon be used to scam a person's family members by faking their voice on a call, or blackmail somebody by threatening to publish fake photos that could damage their reputation. In this regard, I agree with Dr. Ross-Nazzal when he says "Overall, AI is evil" in his blog post. This is not to say that all AI is harmful, as it allows automation of tasks and helps researchers gather data extremely quickly, among many other benefits. We should just be mindful of the damage AI can cause and look to utilize it in ethical ways. It is similar to how when the automobile was first introduced, it was shoddy and caused lots of pollution to the environment. However, as time went on, they became more efficient, safe, and cleaner to the air. AI can be viewed in the same way as it is still in the early development stages, and is likely to improve in the same fashion in years to come.

  55. When I first learned about ChatGPT, it was through a video I saw on social media where the student was giving “tips” on how to write an essay. I was confused since in the video, the student didn’t write the essay at all. Instead, they used an AI to generate the essay for them. I thought to myself, “what’s the point of writing an essay when you didn’t even write it?” The student did almost no work and learned nothing at all. It is disappointing how instead of using developing technology to improve learning, students are encouraging each other to cheat. When I read that you gave your students using AI to do their work a second chance, I was confused. They cheated, so they should face the consequences of their actions. But thinking it over some more, I believe it was the right decision to make. Giving these students a chance to admit their own dishonesty would allow them to realize why their actions weren’t right. It also gave them the chance to learn the material by redoing the entire assignment.

I agree with you that AI is not the enemy, because it isn’t. It’s the way it’s being used that causes it to become evil. There are plenty of ways to use it advantageously such as utilizing it to find resources more quickly or creating a study plan. I’ve personally used ChatGPT to help me learn a new language by creating a weekly plan. It gave me which aspect of the language I should work on each week and free resources that I could use to do so.

  56. My first thought when I hear the word AI is advanced technology. Artificial intelligence has become really popular in the past year but not for good reasons. From what I read, it's been utilized in the wrong way, and it's been targeted at younger people, especially students. I believe that Ai is an essential source created to help us learn and expand our knowledge, not to use it as a plagiarism and cheating tool in school. Professor Ross-Nazzal states, "AI is not necessarily the enemy unless we treat it as one," remarking that at the end of the day, we decide whether to use artificial intelligence for a good or bad cause. AI expanded so quickly that it soon became a cheating source in schools; not only does it cause students to become lazy and cheat, but it makes them dependent on robots. A correlation to this argument would be the Gilded Age lecture by Dr. Ross-Nazzal. The lecture introduces the Gilded Age, an era of expansion, adaptation, and advancement. The lesson explains how a lot of stuff evolved, for example, science and engineering. He states, "Americans took what other people invented and made it better." Illustrating that throughout the years, we have been modifying and improving things. We have developed a lot of things with the help of technology. Furthermore, another correlation to the argument is exploration in the 1490s. At the beginning of time, ships were one of the most important transporting equipment. In Our Story: An Ancillary to US History, chapter two states, "Sail technology made sailing relatively safe and efficient. Another reason behind this push for exploration was due to nationalism." This quote is an excellent example of evolution because not only have ships existed for centuries, but they have been constructed with better-quality materials, making them a better source in today's world. Although ships have been around for a long time and have evolved, not everyone uses them for good causes. Ships are used to transport goods, cars, and equipment, but others use ships to transport things such as drugs. Therefore, I believe that evolution and adaptation have a lot in common when it comes to our latest technology; even though that's the case, I think that at the end of the day, we are responsible for what we do with these things and whether we use them for good or bad causes. Technology has advanced so quickly that we don't even notice its effects on us. Although things come with their pros and cons and at the end of the day, we are the ones who decide how to use them.

  57. The take you have on AI is similar to my own, Dr. Ross-Nazzal. As a student myself, I've heard comments from others along the lines of "Just use AI; it makes the assignment take less than five minutes." But at the heart of this, whether using A.I. was considered plagiarism or not, I wouldn't find myself using it for this purpose. " The danger any student—or faculty member—faces today is falling into the vice of conformism, yielding to groupthink." As students, we already have trouble finding "ourselves" at this age, so now that AI is thrown into the mix, it will only make this process harder. I find it hard to be "satisfied" with yourself after using something like AI to complete your work. If you can't manage to type up at least 250 words yourself, then who even are you? Sure, what I write might not earn the best grade, but at least I can call it mine and cheer about the fact that I worked for whatever I earned. In your lecture, Continuity or Change, you included a quote by President Trump that I found perfectly sums up this whole AI situation, Dr. Ross-Nazzal. "He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same." Most people who use AI use it blindly, without doubt about whatever it spews out at them. If the future of A.I. is removing the uniqueness from a society that already finds it hard to be themselves, then, as you said, Dr. Ross-Nazzal, "At that point, we are in deep kimchi." Hopefully, the benefits of AI will outweigh the negatives.

  58. Is artificial intelligence evil? How can we see the improvement of technology through eyes of disgust? Yes, improvement of technology has been abused to scrap originality in work such being the case of Chat GPT in the classroom setting. Even though this is one hundred percent true, we must celebrate the fact the humanity has come a long way since the development of modern day technology. To justify such celebration of Chat GPT we must go back to a time where such technology was only just beginning, The Cold War. After world war 2, the competition between USA and USSR to be the dominant military and technological force on the planet caused a snowball effect the sparked innovation in modern technology. To fuel this unreached victory by both super powers, advancements in space exploration such as the Sputnik and creation of early computers were made to help aid humanity in such war. Even if they were intended to propel humanity forward, the use of such tools were used for ambitious purposes that weren’t always correct, thus advancements of nuclear bombs and similarly seen with the use of ai and Chat GPT to cheat in essays. I agree up to a certain point that this artificial intelligence is a tool for unoriginality but lets not forget that as humans, we have come a long way from the creation of modern day technology. To think of the exciting new innovations that are yet to come makes me happy we live in a time were Chat GPT is an actual tool for human advancement.

  59. An AI is proof if the evolution of technology. It makes me think about all the other things that people are coming up with. A system that comes up with writing for you? I believe systems as such make the coming up generation more and more lazy. Instead of thinking for yourself and being proud of something you were able to put together that’s original, it’s found easier just to take what’s given with no effort. AI is apart of the decline of real knowledge. A discipline should be given but I also believe in second chances to do it the right way. I believe AI could be a good example maker, to help you understand how things should flow and be organized. I see it as a benefit to help study and guide in the right direction. Though the point isn’t to just take and copy making the process of such technology become evil.
